island6, straight out of a '90s album cover
Over the past few months, the island6 art collective had been in talks with the staff of Emotion, a branch of the ad giant Saatchi, about participating in a showcase as part of the Chivas collective at the historic and glamorous Three on the Bund.
As people who are always behind the camera, it has been rather disconcerting to see ourselves in front of it for a change; we had no idea this participation came with paparazzi attached. Nonetheless, the staff took well to it, making sure that they would be photographed under the best light possible.
All talking and no working made us uncomfortable, so we soon sought refuge in the soothing hum-drum of art making. island6 booked the gig, and was dedicated a whole section of the space-to-be for the event, which ended up looking oddly familiar…

The first wave of islanders got to the space at TOTB as haggard patrons of the neighbouring nightclubs stumbled and sang on the Bund’s pavement.
At early O’Clock, the first brave volunteers were up and ready to receive the artworks, office furniture, chroma-keys, whips, wigs, sunglasses, etc, etc

With just enough time for a quick shower and a touch of make-up, the team was crammed in a cab and whisked off on Saturday night. Well, that’s not entirely true, considering some of us had been there since 7AM…
