Dripping with Aurum: The Opening Party of island6 Hong Kong

island6 Hong Kong’s grand opening on No. 1 New Street, Sheung Wan, dripped with Aurum, champagne, San Miguel, and some true-blue Hong Kong-style rain.

After months of preparation, island6 finally threw open its meticulously washed glass doors in style with a sparkling inaugural show, Dripping with Aurum, a specially curated display that features the art collective’s latest techniques and media.

It was a blustery  Friday evening, with a gloomy typhoon threatening to rain on the island’s parade – and yet about 200 art-lovers, well-wishers and curious kitties showed up to check out the electronic artwork, mingle with fellow creative types and drink a lot of champagne and San Miguel beer.

island6 presented a mix of signature LED, multimedia and interactive artworks, as well as new oil paintings and contemporary sculpture. “Baguette Jambon Beurre”, the call-activated interactive centrepiece, was a hit, especially with the young ladies. The new Chinese-paper cutting with LCD video screen car series also drew laughter and recognition of Shanghai and Hong Kong’s car crazy phenomenon. Other artworks on show included “ Window Dressing” and “The Bitch Pouch”, 2 new oil painting-and-LED-animation pieces, the first of their kind from the art collective.

The attendees of the opening party were a range of old and new faces. Brian Wallace of the influential contemporary art gallery Red Gate Gallery in Beijing had flown in specially to lend his support. George Michell, a long-time partner of island6 and owner of studio rouge, was also in attendance, as was Sarah Greene of Blue Lotus Gallery. We also made many lovely new friends, including pals from  Art Basel,  CULTURE magazine, Pipeline magazine, and Platform China.
