Last month, the island6 crew was blown away by 2 awesome mime artists who graced our green screen for an evening. Indeed, the silent ones are the deadliest. The caged fury and angst of the prowling man in the cage is palpable even through the tiny blinking LED diodes that represent his figure. Blue Cloth Robe for Dancing will join Jolly Jumper and What Would Dante Do? in Singapore at Art Stage 2010 with Art Seasons Singapore. The inner performance halted by a wired corset. Does the over-done make-up of a mime remove all personality or represent an entire new and distinct persona? The inverse played its role in Shanghai when celebrated film star Wang Ying 王瑛 graced a banquet with her presence. Doing so usually required getting all dolled up and ready to ‘flaunt.’ Wang Ying had different ideas about her obligations to such ‘pleasure events’ and diligently avoided them. However on one memorable evening Ms. Ying arrived at one such dinner wearing nothing but a blue robe and no make-up. She boldly strolled in and took a seat without showing any signs of discomfort. Ms. Ying, perhaps, wanted to contrast the duality of who we pretend to be and who we actually are; or maybe just release her inner mime into what is famously known as ‘a blue cloth robe for ballroom dancing.
