This play opens in HK tonight, directed by my friend Eric Ng, we've worked together on several productions. There were years of pre-production talks with the HK Players, HK Rep and David H Hwang in bringing this play to HK, now creating so much buzz that David himself has come out to work with the actors. Don't miss it, only running for a week.
Yellow Face
黃臉孔
By David Henry Hwang
編劇 黃哲倫
"Where are you really from?"
究竟你從哪裡來?The plot sees Asian-American playwright DHH leading a protest against the casting of Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon, condemning the practice as “yellow face”. His position soon comes back to haunt him when he mistakes a Caucasian actor for mixed-race, and casts him in the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound comedy, Face Value. Add to the equation, DHH’s father, Henry Y. Hwang, an immigrant who loves the American Dream but is about to see it turn to nightmare, and you have the beginnings of a brilliant comedy that asks some searching questions which are extremely pertinent to Hong Kong today.April 25-27 2012 at 8pm
