I'm just rereading and revisiting this most incredible book. This book was given to me by a friend when i was dancing full time. I'm so happy to pick up this hard cover again, and turn the pages feeling this woman's energy in every word.
Martha Graham writes of her life, lovers, friends, her craft and sprinkles in her poetic musings on life and dance, which are at times almost as abstract and powerful as her dance images. This book was written shortly before her death.
READ IT, but here is an excerpt.
"They say that the two primary arts were dance and architecture. The word "theatre" was a verb before it was a noun - an act, then a place. That means you must make the gesture, the effort, the real effort to communicate with another being. And you also must have a tree to shelter under in case of storm or sun. This is always that tree, that creative force, and there is always a house, a theatre."
It's a hard book to find.
