Its really quite simple, but we like to make it hard. Does no one see the irony that our very own world needs saving? Yet in our society we still can't admit we are in deep, deep shit. The US president never says the words "global warming," instead he calls it "climate change." I'm pretty sure we have more then a climate change in our hands if we are having tornadoes in Brooklyn. A Hurricane is hitting Hawaii!
The health of our planet is being threatened and we aren't doing so little about it! This is crazy!
How do we change this? What can we do? Are we hopeless?
Yes, Lots, and Hell NO!
Its time to take action. I recently met with some social and environmental geniuses here in SF. The meeting was for a 3 day event to happen about a year from now. The name of this beautiful even is called "The Big One." The Big One is a plat form for the youth (from 12-18) to make a change in the community through their own creative expertise. It's a really quite brilliant concept actually. I think I was the most excited because these guys were ready to kick some ass and take action. They really wanted to let kids create and be a part of the solution. This is not only for the environment but for the community and society of people that is slowly withering away. This event is an attempt to direct our future in some sort of positive direction.
Leonardo Decaprio's 11th Hour is a film that is designed to help the community take action. I hope everyone goes to see it. But is organic, green, and sustainable a trend, or are we really doing something about it? I recently had a friend in Portland, OR tell me that she attended a green event with Al Gore as a presenter. Al arrived at this event in a suburban, and the event wasn't even green. Instead it left a bunch of trash and garbage polluting instead of helping the environment . Is green real? Or is it just another excuse for us to party? The time is now to make change, but yet we act helpless and say that we cannot change.

In the environmental movement the biggest thing we can do is to change our lifestyle. Yes, take public transportation. Yes, carpool. Yes, recycle. Yes, compost. But there is more we can do. I preach on about organic food, because our food is somewhere around 40% of out waste in the world. And that doesn't include our medical drugs which we use to treat our poor food. If everyone bought LOCAL ORGANIC food and ate within 200 miles of their current location we could do so much. So Yes, eat organic. But even that isn't enough. Take action educate. Tell people that it does matter.
In 20 years we will run out of oil, and maybe even sooner. In 10 years we will be fighting water wars for our limited source of water. In 5 years we will have places so hot we will have to vacate them. People have already died because the earth is getting too hot! We need to come together to make a difference. How inspiring is it that you, and yes I mean you, have a chance at saving our world. We all mater, every single person. If we don't start working together we will create our own extinction.
Start recycling, start composting, do something. And keep progressing. Every single person can do it, and I really believe that.
Above all have fun. Greening the earth is something that can be social. Start a community garden. See who is trying to change your community. Do it.
Geoff Lawton says "You can solve all the world's problems in a garden." So don't sit on your hands, dig. Don't walk run to the garden and start working.
OK I'm done preaching.
Be Well,
Mr. Organic
