You want to see Asian actors in good films, forget Hollywood (actually, forget mainstream Hollywood for good films, regardless of who is starring in them, 95% of the time) and watch Asian films instead. Netflix has tons of Asian films. Or buy Asian films on DVD from reputable outlets like YesAsia and support the careers of great Asian actors. I gave up on Hollywood for great films decades ago. These days, if a film doesn't have subtitles, it feels very strange, indeed. As I said on a discussion on this topic on someone else's blog, Hollywood is in the business of making money world-wide. I think they intentionally cast White folks in films because, outside of Europe, North America and Down Under, these White actors are equally foreign (yet strangely familiar) whether the film is showing in Tokyo or Zimbabwe. Most of the money Hollywood makes off these films comes from these "foreign" markets, and a big market is Asia. If someone in Asia wants to see Chow Yun-Fat, they would rather see him in an Asian picture, speaking Canto or being dubbed into Mandarin, than speaking heavily accented English that has to be subtitled or dubbed anyway. Mainline Hollywood films have enormous budgets, they're not going to risk the success of these films by doing something daring. That's what the independents are for. Though the independents don't play well internationally, do they?
