Road trip

Seeing DY's blog about his first attempt at riding... thought i'd put up some pics of my first ride too. :P

That is...my first "cross-border" ride up north from Singapore, through Malaysia, and up to Phuket in Thailand with my brother Frank

I started riding at 18 but never ventured further than Johor Bahru til early this year. i wouldn't have imagined it myself that for a first attempt, i'd cover 3000km there and back over 5 days.

Day 1:

my current ride, a 1996 Honda 'Steed' VSE 400. We set off early in the morning on 11 Jan 2008...

...stoppping every hour or so at Rest and Service Areas dotted along the North-South highway in Malaysia. Interestingly, it's either that or a serious lack of imagination, all the RSAs had green tiled roofs.

There's no chance of losing our way...

...cos it's just 1 endless stretch....

Day 2:

We covered about 1000km to reach Hatyai. But there's no time for sight seeing. Just some shots at the police post after breakfast...

...then we hit the road again... (Frank's ride's a Monster400)

...with regular stops for water and fuel.

Day 3:

We reach Phuket after another 500km

No time to enjoy the sun, sand and sea though... ...we've reached our intended destination... ...so it's time to head back...

...but we had time enough for a proper lunch at Krabi...

...before ending the day back in Hatyai.

Day 4:

Rest day. Went to a famous waterfall about 17km from the city

There's 6 or 7 levels to climb...

...but by the time we got to the 3rd level...

...we were both huffing and puffing...

...so we called it quits. But as you can see, it's pretty high up already.

Day 5:

6am. We cross the border once again at Sadao...

...with another 1000km to cover on the return leg back through Malaysia and into Singapore.

And in the end, what did i have to show for the past 5 days...

wow.. great trip! Can you use the same license plates on your bike for the whole trip or do you need to register your vehicle for each country? How does that work? I'd love to take a ride like that someday. Or maybe take one across China ... hmm ....

Chris> the trip looks nice on picture...but my butt would disagree :P Jeanne> thanx...short and sweet :) narom> good question man. i didn't know it b4 myself, but at the Thai border we had to produce papers to proof ownership and fill out an 'importation' form. We ran into some trouble on the way in cos Frank brought the wrong papers. Luckily for us, there was a LAN shop nearby that had a printer ( the first shop we tried had no printer) so we could go online and download from the relevant government website. We got held up for like 3 hours. the 50km ride to Hatyai was in almost pitch darkness. pretty scary for us firsttimers. :P btw, it's possible to ride from SG all the way into China isn't it? though my butt would nvr approve =)) MindyG> not very fast at all...average was about 110km/h. Could have hit 160 easy had i been riding my supermagna700 ( sold last year ) i say go for it gurl! :) sono> erm...which peninsular? i dropped geography in secondary school :P there's a few waterfalls in the vicinity. can't recall the name of the place. it's not far from hatyai city area, located in a nature reserve. There're shops selling food and sovenirs and swimming is allowed at the first 2 levels but food and drinks beyond the foothill. There's also a 20baht entrance fee...and extra charge for a 4WD...bikes go in for free :P

Raul> yeah, it was a great experience for me. especially riding in thailand cos we were passing lots of villages and towns, plantations and padi field, even saw a few pickup trucks with a bull in the back...probably en route to inseminate neighbouring farmers' cows :P sono>it's my pleasure to share :) and if u plan on going to hatyai, there's a hotel situated directly opposite a funeral home...i dun remember which but u'd probably wanna avoid that one. :P

sono> in that case, i think it's best you bring a friend along to watch your back the next time you decide to whip out your camera =)) MindyG>'shall be'? so its not even in the planning stage yet? guess it'll be awhile b4 we can ride together :P shooky> Thanx. there were quite a few scary moments actually. the worst for me was going downslope in the hills thru a series of really tight S curves at night with no street lamps. it was 1 lane up , 1 lane down . luckily no other vehicle came up. i guess even the locals avoid that treacherous stretch at night. we were about 60km from phuket and had taken a wrong turn into the high country. elle> i had to lie on my side in a ditch to take that shot. That was a good lunch indeed. most times we made do with packets of nuts, chocloate wafers and bottle water. gotta get your feet wet if it's good shots you want ;)
