1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"
How many times in life do we complain about our circumstances and say, "I wish I had this." or "I want that." Remember Jesus was was "hungry," and in need when Satan tried to tempt Him. Jesus responded confidently with the Word of God and was solely dependent on what his Father said.
This verse hit me today because I see that it is the devil who is tempting us in our current circumstances. Many times I've look at temptation as just "SEX, DRUGS, ROCK N ROLL, " but temptation is much more than that. The next time you're "hungry" or in a hard spot think twice before you pick up a stone and try to turn it into bread. As tempting as it is to make things happen, you might end up with a set of broken teeth.
My hope is that we will be much more aware and keen to what the devil is doing. That we will be quick to recognize temptation, and overcome it by trusting in the Word of God.
