“But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends…” – Luke 15:28

Being angry at the father, the older son has made a judgement call. He believes Father’s decision is absolutely wrong and unfair. I imagine he thinks lil Mikey is better off DEAD. This little brother of his, who betrayed and dishonored the family who once wished the father dead, is back and being celebrated.

Plainly said… Older brother is PISSED OFF.

His judgement and perception of what the father is doing has made him so furious that he cannot celebrate the life of someone whom the Father loves so dearly. He is so possessed by what he believes to be right and wrong (law/religion) that he demands justice. The Father on the other hand who desires to give mercy is broken hearted. The older son, who is now living under the law (slavery), is reluctant to partake of the fattened calf (blessings/inheritance) because of his own bitterness and judgement towards the family.

We can only receive what God has for us when our hands are open wide.

Lord, help me to always choose mercy and not judgment.

Father protect me from being religious…
