In talks with publisher stateside to publish the history of the ART ASYLUM as a hardcover coffee table book. Lot of rights issues to deal with ( Marvel/Lucasfilm etc ) as well the fact that I no longer own the company. Diamond Distribution bought us 3 years ago.
They seem game for it . The only real issue ( as always ) is my desire to be honest about what went on behind the scenes. Of course - true to form- no one ever wants to do anything different. They would want to see a collection of work with very little text about the blood and guts of the company.
I want to do the book 100% my way as it's certainly not about money but to leave behind a monument to AA and it's cast of characters. Diamond is now actively using the name and they do great work still- but Art Asylum died the day I resigned and was in a state of half life for years despite the volume of work being produced on Minimates and other projects that lit me up on occasion like JUMP TRIBE with Clive Barker or other things we were too early with or just bad timing.
Timing is everything.
So - rather than do a best of SPAWN -McFarlane Toys book I'd like to create a more doco style project thats honest. I started the company at 25 with no business education- actually - with very little education full stop except hard knocks.
I want to lay this out as truthfully as I can with interviews with all the people we worked with. Some hate me some love me. That's life when you don't blend into the background. The events that lead to our quick ascent as the leading toy design company to what seemed like long slow agonizing hell to get the fuck out.
This is not happening til 2010 the soonest but I'll be getting my head around it, compiling images and writing what I can when I can.
Peace love
