Screenfighting DK

I recently had the great pleasure of being invited to teach a course in screenfighting at the dojo of Ki Ju Jitsu in Frederiksvœrk. The school also known as Frederiksvœrk Self Defence is actually the place where i started my first formal training in martial arts 25 years ago!

It was a true honor to be invited there after all these years. My childhood friend and former dojo class-mate Sensei Martin is now running the school and he has done an amazing job there! All though we only get a chance to meet every five years it still feels like we just saw each other yesterday.

Our martial arts training started when we saw our first Bruce Lee movie together and like many other kids tried to duplicate the fancy moves in the backyard, often resulting in coming back to dinner black and blue from beating each other up all day. We soon learned that the art of screenfighting and stunts was what made that kind of action doable, but our studies in the martial arts had begun there with the movies!

Years later I shifted my studies to the art of Wing Chun and Martin continued his training in Ki Ju Jitsu. Martin is now chief-instructor for the dojo and a great source of knowledge should I need to do some research about the Japanese martial arts when and if my roles require it.

Back to the reason for me being invited there was again the inspiration from the world of cinema. I dare say that most martial arts students got their interest peaked from the movies. In my case it was the graceful moves of a Bruce Lee, a charismatic Jean Claude Van Damme and a bunch of other martial arts stars that got me started. I soon realized and learned of the many other great benefits of studying the martial arts such as health, concentration, discipline and determination amongst others.

My course in screenfighting for these martial arts students was also just meant as an inspiration, demystify the violent acts on film and show the training it takes to gain agility and power on screen.

All the students were amazing to teach and welcomed me with great enthusiasm and energy. Treading the mats in my old dojo I couldn't help but feel I was twenty five years back in time, kicking and punching like there was no tomorrow!
