Outrage |

Yesterday morning I was rudely awakened by a phone call from my management telling me that a certain "trash" magazine had released photos taken of me inside my apartment. When I finally saw them, I was shocked and horrified to find that these paparazzi had been staked-out outside my house for several days and monitoring my every move. They chose to print the most distasteful selection of photos of my girlfriend and I and of course accompanied it with extremely low class writing to go with. I was especially appalled by what they wrote about Lisa. Why do these "trash" magazines feel they need to constantly demean women in this way? I am not the first person this has happened to and I will most likely not be the last, but this kind of gross invasion of privacy must be stopped. Why must the Hong Kong media behave in such ways? Why must they do everything possible to make public personalities live in constant fear and paranoia? Even in other parts of the world, where the paparazzi are known to be more menacing than Hong Kong, these kind of photos are not allowed to go to press simply because there are laws protecting people from this. Why don't these laws exist in Hong Kong? People know that I am quite an easygoing guy. I understand that I am a public figure and that I am target to public scrutiny, that is why in the past when I am "outside" in the public, I make an effort to be nice to the paparazzi and have never expressed anger or ill will towards them. It's their job and their right to do what they do, however, I do not believe that I should be fearful of being watched in my own home, in fact, no one should regardless if they are public personality or not. This said, I don't blame the paparazzi. It's not really their fault. The fault is of the magazines, their editors and their bosses. They are the ones that allow this to happen. They are the ones lowering society's standards. They are the big boss drug dealers who could care less about hurting people and the world they live in. There is no other country in the world where gossip magazines out number newspapers and regular magazines besides Hong Kong. What does that say about Hong Kong? These magazines are the ugly "monsters" of the media industry and of our society. I think it is time that we make a stand against these "monsters". This will be a difficult battle because these "monsters" are corporations with plenty of money and power and connections and can easily fight off us individual victims. However, if you believe in the story of David and Goliath, then this battle can be won and they only way we can win this, is if we band together and express our outrage and try to have some form of government policy made. Also to you fans and members of the public, if you can at all understand what this puts artistes through and you feel any sense of compassion for us, I please beg you to STOP buying these "trash" magazines because demand for this junk is what feeds the monster, if you don't buy them, then they can't be supported. Advertisers: Think clearly before you advertise with these "trash" magazines. Do you really want your product associated with so much garbage? I have already stopped working with these magazines a long time ago, so you won't find any "real" information about me in them anyway. I have also decided I will reject any advertising campaigns that insist on advertising with these magazines. I have received a tremendous amount of support from my company, my close friends and family on this matter. All three of the ALIVE boys called me individually yesterday to lend me their support. I was extremely touched by the fact that they were able to put away our recent troubles (which were blown out of proportion by the media, of course.) and able to rally together to support me on this issue. "Don't mess with the ALIVE family" is the message that I felt from them. In fact at one point yesterday I was thinking about moving out of Hong Kong entirely but Terence calmed me down and suggested I write this blog to vent my frustrations instead. It is times like these when you know the true colors of your friends and I am glad to say that each and everyone is standing by my side. The other night at the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo, Maggie Cheung received an award for her accomplishments in the film industry. For her speech, instead on just the regular kudos, she actually dedicated her speech to plead with the Hong Kong media to "stop stomping on our own industry and our own people" because if they don't ,there will no longer be a next generation to fill the ranks. It was brave and bold of her to reach out and take action. Her speech and what has happened to me has made me decide to make a bigger effort on this front. I hope that you will all support me on this mission. Thank you for reading. Daniel
