So I'd been traveling for two months, and had one night in Hong Kong on my way home to Beijing, when Spencer Douglass called me and suggested that I come down to the offices of Fluid Friction for a tour. Perhaps I might want to bring my camera along and see if anything looked tasty. Or maybe it was my idea; who can remember these things? So I canceled my travel plans, decided to walk to Beijing instead - dang non-refundable tickets - and headed to Fluid Friction for what I was sure would be the usual cramped Hong Kong-how-can-I-make-this-look-good?-office experience. Then again, maybe I should stop using AnD's office as my yardstick. As soon as we got to the second floor of the building, I knew this was not going to be business as usual.
Fluid Friction is a Hong Kong based international team dedicated to producing innovative and original graphic novels. Their uber cool first entry into the market is an epic tale called DevaShard that is sure to garner Fluid Friction legions of loyal fans eager to receive new issues and future titles (shamefully nicked and massaged from fluidfriction.com) But this isn't about what they do as much as how and where they do it. So follow me for a glimpse into the one office in Hong Kong I wouldn't mind working at.
At first glimpse, the place looks entirely dedicated to DevaShard; from the art on the walls to the titles in the magazine rack. But the further I got into the place, it was clear that more is on the horizon.
Their meeting room has beanbags. Beanbags!
Another Wall dedicated to the epic tale.
It was on this back wall in the core of the "hive", as the staff call it, that I found action figures, all manner of magazines, graphic novels, manga and the severed head of a Starship Trooper. Graphic indeed!
How's this for a brainstorming session? And more beanbags!
They have a gym too, but I'm only giving you a glimpse.
Although my friend Jack came along to check things out too, he immediately grabbed a copy of DevaShard off the shelf, sat down on a couch and began to read it from cover to cover. Seriously, I couldn't leave until he was finished and so, Spencer and I waited.
And now a word from our sponsors. Today's tour was brought to you by the letters A and D. We hope you enjoyed the show.
