A Poem for the Sleeping

When is a poem finished?  Is this even a poem?  It probably still needs some work, but since it's been gathering dust, I thought I would share it.  Perhaps in doing so, some life can be breathed into these slumbering thoughts.

When light ebbs and your head embraces the pillow,

What thoughts cross your mind?

What do you imagine in those waning moments,

Before you drift away?

Do you ponder your day, things forgotten,

The promises and challenges of tomorrow?

As your eyes seal tight,

What dances in your mind and illumines your eyelids?

Are there thoughts of me?

When moonlight splashes through your bedroom window,

And this world melts into the ether of night,

What dreams entertain you?

Are there forests and creatures and frogs that delight?

Meandering streams and mountains soaring?

Do you fly to cities, near and far?

Quest for meaning, learn from old souls?

As your dreams cast spells on your mind,

Do you find pictures of me hanging there?

When dawn comes washing over curtains and sunlight warms your face,

What lingers on the tip of your memory?

Do you visit old friends,

Experience new things and recall the unknowable?

As the Elysium of slumber recedes,

And this world begins to crash upon your mind,

What flotsam remains?

Are there pieces of me washed upon your shores?
