One smart Cookie
As we wrap Beach Spike!, I'm thinking back to what a pleasure its been to work with some actors who I've known for a while, but only just got to collaborate with. One of these is Theresa Fu Wing, who was one of my earliest hires for the film.
I first met Theresa when I interviewed her for the US DVD release of the Wu Jing actioner 'Fatal Contact'. She struck me then as being very bright and fun, and probably better than most of the roles she was being offered at that time.
Theresa used to be one of a 9 (yes, nine!) piece girl band named Cookies. I didn't know her at that time, though I was friends with another of their members, Helena Ma. (You can see her and I discussing Anita Mui on Youtube!)
When we first conceived the story for Beach Spike!, we knew we needed someone to play the sweet 'girl next door' among all these curvaceous 'leng mo' and amazonian vixens. Fu Wing definitely fit the bill. She immediately committed herself to a rigorous volleyball and martial arts training regimen.
I don't think she had ever done this kind of training before, at least not to this level, but I really appreciated her determination and stamina. It stood her in good stead when she had to spike the ball on the hot sand, and when she had to show her kung fu skills on a hot summer day!
My thanks to Andrew and the team at Filmko for facilitating our getting Theresa on-board. She was good for the film, and I hope the film will be good for her!
