The sun goes down on Paradise Beach
As we wrap Beach Spike!, I can reflect on a fast and happy shoot. I learn new things on every film, sometimes things I don't want to accept! For one thing, I realised that, as I get older, the casts always stay the same age. Whatever age you are as a producer, your actors tend to be 20 somethings! Ah, well, I guess all that youthful energy is good for me, especially considering I have so many young children myself to contend with.
On every film, you get to meet a couple of folk you tip for great things. I think Law Jung-heem, our male lead, has great potential, at least in the local market. He has the requisite matinee idol looks and buff physique, but, beyond that, he's a great worker, and joy to have around. Previously, he was known primarily as a TV actor, and I hope Beach Spike! sees the start of the theatrical career he deserves.
Thirdly, I got to appreciate the beauties of Poi O, on Lantau Island, where we shot the bulk of our beach scenes. It was hot as heck, but what a beautiful place to make a movie! I'll definitely return for a weekend trip with the family. Take the chance to check out where we shot the film you've been reading about.
Finally, I found a new idol and friend in the person of Shaw Bros legend Lo Mang. Still in great shape, and a much better actor than he's given credit for. Everyone on the shoot was so glad that we cast him as Uncle Dao, and I look forward to working with him again soon!
