Teddy Kennedy got all the attention, but we've lost several people lately. Shing Fui On 成奎安... If you don't know the name, you'll surely recognize the face
In the late 80s and early 90s when HK films were the second most influencial/greatest filmmaking industry in the world, this man was EVERYWHERE.
RIP "Big Silly".
We also lost US writer/journalist Dominick Dunne a few days ago.
He's best known, to Californians for writing an epic piece on the OJ Simpson trial. I'm not sure how big the OJ thing was in HK, but in California it dominated the entire media for a year. This was before the day of the internet, wonder how much more it would have blown up in today's age.
Come to think of it now, that was such a race thing when it shouldn't be. The evidence were there. Overwhelming evidence.
Another reason Dunne is well known is because his daughter was infamously considered to be part of the Poltergeist curse (google it, it's scary), she was strangled to death by her ex bf. Now this is getting off topic but America has such a fucked up justice system it always baffles me. The dude who strangled her to death only served four years in prison. FOUR. for murdering someone. You'd probably get more time in Singapore for kicking a trash can.
Anyway, Dunne wrote this masterful piece.

Check it out if you're interested in compelling journalism
My mass media teacher in high school forced me to read it at the time (back then I was only interested in reading comics, Slam Magazine and Spin)
I'd like to think my feature writing ability have improved drastically the last year and half. Partly because Mr Murphy was kind enough to teach/guide me through the years, and partly because I just read stuff like this all day. Nonstop. I read more than I do anything else. I don't even use my iPhone as a phone, more as an internet reading device (kinda like the Kindle, but not as gay sounding)
More than ever, I know what I want to do--feature writing. No more puff pieces on bands or club DJ interviews. Pumping out 5500 words for two features the last four days messed up my already ridiculous sleeping habits, but there was a point when I printed out the writing, and I was reading it at Olivers Sandwich (baked potato w/beans. felt bad for my roommate's girlfriend's sister who stayed over and used the same bathroom that night), I felt a sense of accomplishment.
I have to thank Steve Nash for providing inspiration and motivation over the last couple of months. Here's his story:
The year was oh-four and all Nash did was ball.
In the rearview mirror, was the motherfucking law
"Oh he too old, he done"
"Man, Phoenix making a mistake signing him, son"
All around Nash, he heard that talk.
Even his boss, Mark Cuban, allowed him to walk.
So you know what he did? He worked his ass off
In 05, with dirt off his shoulders, took the MVP, made the Mavs looked soft.
Nash developed this swagger
I referred to it on my xanga
As somethin' like "Denzel-in-Training-Day, the whole saga"
Even Chuck Barkley gave him props on TNT, they know drama
"Oh that Steve Nash, he a bad motherfucker"
Thanks Steve Nash
