I Shot HK thoughts:Both of Simon Yin's videos were great, the Josie one was cool with the Hard Candy reference, but it's the Wanchai or Lankwai one that had the entire theater clapping.
The Isle of the Damned is a narly gorefest...and it's written by a former HK Editor and stars a former Juice Editor (though that was pretty cool)!
There's one I don't remember the name to right now, but it's this rock and roll music video made over the nightscene in HK. It was awesome and I am mad at myself for not remembering the name to the piece.
Bamboo, although not really my cup of tea, is a beautifully shot short.
The rest ranged from solid to manipulative to just down right horrible. The horrible one, I'm not gonna name it but everyone who attended probably know which one I'm talking about. The entire audience was WTF...
Now for two shorts that I don't necesarrily dislike but I thought was a bit manipulative: the first one tells us to be a vegetarian because eating beef and consuming dairy is linked to increased pollution and other eco-unfriendly results. The thing that irked me was I know for a fact some of the people in the video are not vegeterians. The short acknowledges this in the end but implies they will be making the jump soon--yeah right. The second short wants us to stop eating shark fin because sharks are in danger of extinction. I have no problem with that message, but the video then shows a bunch of clips of Sharks being cut up as a way to make us feel sorry for them... it fails because in that same video they talk about how sharks are Apex predators. So why not show clips of Sharks eating poor Nemo or tearing a squid to bits?
In all, I Shot HK is a great event highlighting the creativity of people in HK. Keep up the good work, guys.
