Love him or hate him--and he does seem to have that polarizing effect on folks--you can't deny Quentin Taratino's passion for films.
Inglorious Basterds may not be for everyone; I have a feeling alot of locals won't get it cause it's too wordy and lacking that big "action" scene. I think some people may be put off by the fact that Taratin looks at the Jews and Nazis from a new angle: although they're not exactly "good", the Nazis are generally portrayed as honorable and stand by their word. Meanwhile, it's Brad Pitt and his Basterds, other Jews and anti-Nazi folks who routinely break their word and enjoy murdering Nazis in a near psychopathic way.
I loved Inglorious Basterds personally. It's typical Taratino--long dialogues, witty banter, offbeat music cues that WILL get stuck in your head (admit it, you know that alarm tune that goes off everytime The Bride meets one of the members of the Deadly Viper Assassins was stuck in your head), hilariously dark characters (a Jew who likes to beat Nazis over the head with a baseball bat repeatedly), absurb scenarios, Mexican stand offs, cameos by Sam Jackson and Harvey Keitel, and a truly amazing, perhaps career defining, performance (by Christopher Waltz, who played the JEW HUNTER)
There's a scene near the end of the movie ("Revenge of the Big Head") that's clearly influenced by a 70s classic horror film. It's probably gonna go down as one of the iconic film images of 2009.
The best thing I can say about the movie is I was completely entertained and it is definitely different from everything else in the cinema this year. And I don't know if I can give too heavy a praise for the entire film, but the final 30 minutes is masterful. I think no matter if you liked the movie or not up until then, the final 30 minutes will still suck you in.
My best movies of 2009 list thus far
1: Gran Torino
2: Up
3: The Wrestler
4: Star Trek
5: Inglorious Basterds
6: Frost/Nixon
7: The Hangover
8: Doubt
9: Slumdog Millionaire (OVERRATED)
10: Milk/Departures (can't decide)
I think, no, I hope 500 Days of Summer will make this list, preferably near the top.
I'll gladly knock off Slumdog Millionaire if two more great films come out. Overrated as hell...swept the Oscars while Dark Knight and Wall-E couldn't even get a nomination??? that was such a joke the Oscars had to change the format and go to ten nominations in 2010.
