Larry Legend

I’m reading the Jan issue of Esquire (the one with The Man With No Name on the cover). The feature story is “What I’ve Learned: Lessons From 50 States”. It’s 50 celebrities, one from each state, talking about their careers and principles.

There’s Clint Eastwood, Eminem, Jesse Jackson, Paris Hilton, etc.

What they did with the profile was they’d list the dude’s name, followed by age and occupation.

it’d be: “Clint Eastwood, 78, Actor/Director”

“Chuck Klosterman, 36, Writer”

“Wayne Newton, 63, Singer”

Pretty straightforward stuff.

But then I got to Indiana.

“Larry Bird, 52, Legend”

He’s not listed as “Athlete”, or “Former Professional Basketball Player”. He’s simply LEGEND.

I consider Bird to be the second greatest player of all time (the SGOAT if you will). It irks me when people call him “the greatest white baller ever” cause that’s a backhanded compliment. I also disagree with the majority who ranks MAgic over Bird because Magic had a better supporting cast—he wasn’t even the best player on his own team until maybe his 4th or 5th year—and played in a far weaker conference (Which should cancel out Magics’ two extra rings advantage. I mean Bird was going against Isiah Thomas, Jordan and Doctor J just to get out of the East while Magic was battling Rolando Blackman and Tom Chambers for god’s sake.)…

So yeah, Larry Legend, hailed as legend among 49 other mortals.

That put a smile on my face.

but kareem is still better than anyone not named bird on the celtics. and magic wasnt even the clearcut best player on his own team until his 4th or 5th season. Bird was the man from the get go.
