I hate Hong Kong bookstores

I was at Dymocks browsing through the motivation section. Tthe books are only really on two subjects, and they're areas of life I've failed in for most of my 27 years.

I hate Hong Kong bookstores. I know there is more to life than just that and that. But because HK bookstores are so small they don't have room in the motivation section to store other stuff.

Over in the states, the same section at Borders would have books on how to work on your golf swing, how to calculate pot odds in poker, how to box out properly, how to play a blues lick. So I'll walk by the section, see that I fail miserably in two subjects, but then I'll console myself by saying "well at least i'm hitting the 1-3 pocket correctly when I'm bowling".

Here? No, it's either that and that.

So if you're 30 and you don't have neither, you might as well kill yourself. That's the message from HK bookstores.

You know the Dymocks top ten best seller list haveTHREE Malcom Gladwell books on it? The most popular one is Outliers, a book about how outside factors/luck play major roles in the making of a successful person. It's a great and intriguing read except that the book define success solely by net worth and corporate status. That kinda thinking is perfect for this city though, where "fans" show up to their favorite Cantopop artists concert with pre-packaged signs manufactured by the studios and a topic as fucking stupid as models-at-book-fairs is a raging hot topic.

"We're living in a time where everyone is obsessed with success," Gladwell told me during a phone interview last week.

Obsessed with success is okay, but first define the term.

With that said, Gladwell's seminar which costs HKD 6000 to attend, will probably be quite popular.  Well I'm telling y'all now Bill Simmons is a better writer. They write the same thing but Simmons writes about LIFE and being passionate about things.
