The Dragon Boat Races is a pretty cool event bringing teams out from all over the Bay Area to compete. As part of the event there are lots of Cultural Performances. Last time I posted some pictures of the SF Wushu Team's performance....also performing after us was Yau Gung Moon. It is always good to see that some one is still carrying on the torch for traditional wushu...otherwise these styles will die out. Yau Gung Moon is led by Sifu Lai lok Sang, their style is known as Southern Dragon.....it's postures are reminiscent of Wing Chun, southern Crane, southern Mantis and probably evolved from the ancient Five or Great Ancestor Styles....Tai Ju quan....they all fight from a sucked in chest and defend the centerline. In Hong Kong and Malaysia they are famous for their Southern Hoksang Lion dancing.
The Southern Hoksang Lion is characterized by it's rather flat mouth..popular in southern China and Malaysia.
Lion dancing has it's own athletic difficulties.....lion nandu!
Rarely seen is the Choreographed Lion Music Set, where the instrument players must also perform stances with the drums. In the old days each of these instruments could be used as a weapon.
Stance work and Lion Music help to work traditional fighting stances.
Southern dragon fights from a hi posture with the chest and stomach pulled in.
Southern staff is often a two ended weapon, where the fighter holds the middle rather than the end as in Northern staff.
Coiling...one of the broadsword technique used to protect the body from the spear.
Pi quan a staple of many southern styles used for breaking your opponent's guard then quickly opening back up and smashing into the opponent.
A perfect day...looking back at San Francisco from Treasure Island.
Of course hard practice always goes with good food.......can't expect to do martial arts well if you don't eat well. so ely and I went to Pagan....a new place on Clement St in the inner Richmond district between 8th&9th Avenues.
It serves excellent Burmese Food....this is their second establishment, they have one also at 32 Ave., that one also serves Thai food.
The decor is nice and very clean and spiffy!
Egg Noodles and crispy chicken with scallions and onions....yummy reminds me of the food at Royal Thai....that Jason and I used to go to alot!
My favorite..the Kow soi Dok......shrimp Noodle salad.....you don't see any shrimp......that's because its been shredded and dried used just to flavor!
Ok. gotta go time to start class!! Have a nice one!!
