How do you measure success? In 1975 when John T. Molloy's "Dress for Success" hit the bookstore's it's impact was to bring to the corporate world the awareness of image. Based on research of image acceptability, "Dress for Success" represented the national consensus for the acceptable image for corporate leadership throughout the boardrooms of the East Coast and the Midwest. Killings were made based on the selling of the 'trusted" image. Thus was born the professional image consultancy industry. Boring, boring, boring! zzzzzzzzzt!
Meanwhile at that same time another legend was born on the West Coast in costume design.
I recently had the pleasure of working with Milena Canonero whose first Academy recognition was as costume designer for "Barry Lyndon" (1975). Throughout her career she has sustained a quality performance standard that earned her a Costume Designer's Guild Career Achievement award, eight Oscar nominations and three wins!
Unassuming and almost unnoticed (save for the whispers of those who knew) as she quietly went about her business designing and fitting the many Hong Kong based actors in this project: Kenneth Tsang, Eddie Ko, Michael Wong, Ankie Beilke, Kirt Kishita and Carl Ng.
She truly dressed me to kill......these days dressing for power no longer means the pin stripe suit for me. I have augmented my wardrobe to include spiritual power and FIREPOWER!
