(Hong Kong — February 23, 2016) The third edition of the Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong (September 22 to October 2, 2016 at The Metroplex) comes back bolder, richer and with new short film programs for local filmmakers in the spring and summer. The 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong will again feature a large variety of award-winning independent films featured at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, U.S.A. as well as Q&A sessions and panel discussions with Festival programmers and visiting filmmakers. Screening and ticketing information will be made available at hk.sundance.org and facebook.com/SundanceFilmFestivalHK in summer 2016. In advance of the festival, local filmmakers are invited to participate in new programs highlighting short films.

Empower the next generation
March 19 & 20, 2016
Recognizing the important role that shorts have in cinema, storytelling, and culture, Sundance Institute and The Metroplex jointly present the 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong Short Film Master Class to help empower the next generation of artists. This half-day seminar focuses on narrative short-form storytelling, offering first-hand insight and access into the world of story development, writing, production, working with cast and crew, what to do with your short once it is complete, and how to get the most out of making a short film. Participants will also learn how the Sundance Film Festival finds short films, and filmmakers will share their experiences in making shorts.

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong Short Film Master Class will be held at The Metroplex. Participants can choose to enroll in either class on March 19, 2016 or March 20, 2016 with an admission fee of HKD$150 per person. 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong Short Film Competition
Nurture creativity of local filmmakers
March 21 - June 30, 2016
Short films have always been a major element of the Sundance Film Festival. Over the years, many talented directors have made their mark and kick started their career at the Sundance Film Festival, such as Wes Anderson, Spike Jonze, Todd Haynes and David O. Russell, to name a few. Reaching out to Asia for its first time, with the mission to nurture the creativity of local independent filmmakers, the two co-organizers are proud to present the first edition of Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong Short Film Competition.
Hong Kong permanent residents age 18 or above are welcome to enroll. There are no limitation on genres or themes however all entries must be completed on or after January 1, 2015, with a duration between 3 to 15 minutes. The jury panel includes representatives from the U.S. and Hong Kong:

The competition comes with amazing prizes. Official selected shorts will be screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong in September. The winner of the Jury Award will receive a HKD$30,000 cash prize as well as an invitation to attend the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in 2017 (roundtrip air ticket and hotel accommodation inclusive).

Following the momentum created by the master class and competition, Sundance Institute and The Metroplex present the 2016 Sundance Film Festival: Hong Kong Short Film Showcase, a screening series of 3 programs featuring award-winning Sundance Film Festival short films. The showcase will take place from April to June at The Metroplex.
