Hong Kong Cleanup Ranks #1 In World!
Join Hands With Us For Local Effort, Global Effect
14th Annual Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge runs until November 1st.
Sign up a team and take the Hong Kong Trash Bucket Challenge!
September 22, 2014, Hong Kong – From September 20th to November 1st, hundreds of teams representing tens of thousands of volunteers will be taking part in the 14th annual 6-week Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge, as part of the world’s largest environmental volunteer effort.
Organized by Ecozine and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The Hong Kong Cleanup is truly an important initiative for action, awareness and empowerment. Last year, over 45,000 citizens picked up more than 100,000 kg of trash -- ranking Hong Kong as number 1 in the world in terms of the amount of trash collected, according to Ocean Conservancy’s global report.
Globally last year, nearly 650,000 people picked up over 6 million kg of trash along 13,000 miles of coastline as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, and millions more participated in other cleanup initiatives around the world.
“With debris threatening biodiversity, the economy and human health and safety, we can’t just rely on cleanups. We need to look upstream to prevent pollution from entering the ocean in the first place,” said Hong Kong Cleanup Co-Founder, Nissa Marion.
“The environment is a wholly owned subsidiary of nature, it sustains us – gives us the air we breathe, the food we eat and ensures our good health… it’s the source of all human wealth. The Hong Kong Cleanup offers everyone a way to take action,“ said Charles Bedford, Regional Managing Director, Asia Pacific Region for The Nature Conservancy, co-organizer of the event.
Trash Bucket Challenge
Inspired by the successful ice bucket challenge, this year, the Hong Kong Cleanup invites you to save water and our plastic-filled oceans and join the #TrashBucketChallenge!
The concept is simple – First, sign up a team for the Hong Kong Cleanup. At your cleanup, fill a bucket or bag of trash, take a video, and put the trash where it belongs (in the recycling bin)! Then, post it on Facebook, hashtag #TrashBucketChallenge, #HKcleanup, #HongKong and challenge 3 friends to do the same. To really have an impact, consider making a donation to The Nature Conservancy too!
The co-founders of the Hong Kong Cleanup were pleased to kick off the Challenge with a video of their own (view here). "The Hong Kong Trash Bucket Challenge is a chance to have fun and do something meaningful for our oceans, country parks, nature and wildlife,” shares Hong Kong Cleanup founder Lisa Christensen. She adds, “Together, we can stop the flow of plastic litter!”
Everyone in Hong Kong is encouraged to sign up a team for the 2014 Cleanup Challenge, and take a crucial and active part in changing Hong Kong’s littered landscapes. Registration is free and now open at HKcleanup.org!
You can also help by donating online at www.tnc.org.hk and supporting conservation programs around the Asia Pacific region.
