Lamma Island Plastic Clean up |星期二南丫島海灘膠粒清潔行動

Dear friends,  as you know alive has always had a strong commitment to charity and environmental causes.  In addition to providing free media sponsorship for a number of causes we also get more involved from time to time.  Last week AnD staff Elena helped to organize a group of volunteers to help with an environmental crisis here in Hong Kong:

On July 23rd, 2012, 150 tonnes of plastic pellets spilled from the ship Yong Xin Jie 1, traveling through Hong Kong waters at the height of the signal 10 Typhoon Vicente.

Six containers of polypropylene pellets as well as one container of clear plastic bottles fell into the sea off Lamma Island. Within days large amounts of pellets began washing up on beaches around Hong Kong and pellets have been found in the digestive tracts of fish sampled at local fisheries.

While the local government failed to react quickly, hundreds of volunteers have self organized and scoured local coastlines trying to clean as many of the pellets as possible. On August 7th local artists brought together through alivenotdead.com along with their fans and friends formed a group of over 300 volunteers who cleaned on beaches around Shek Pai Wan on Lamma Island.
