[September 27, 2012 – Hong Kong]– Hong Kong Automobile Association, local organiser of the world renowned Red Bull Soapbox Race, today announced that the inaugural Hong Kong event will take place on a steep downhill race-track on To Shek Street in Shatin on Sunday 14th October. This free admission event is expected to attract more than 10,000 spectators, in what the organiser expects to be one of the most talked about events to come to Hong Kong this year.
Red Bull Soapbox Race 2012 is being billed as Hong Kong’s craziest day out, and will witness some of the city’s bravest and craziest drivers heading down the hillside descent in the wackiest home-built vehicles in a quest to be crowned Red Bull Soapbox Champion.Don’t be surprised to see giant Dim Sum or Fishball carts whizzing down the track!
A human powered downhill race, the Red Bull Soapbox requires courage, skill and creativity from all who compete on a 372m course. With no driving license required, the exhibition event will be contested by a combination of racing fanatics, absolute beginners and out-and-out exhibitionists.
50 teams have been selected to compete in the Soapbox Race following an over-subscribed application process that saw over 150 teams submit designs in a bid to make Hong Kong soapbox racing history.
Spectators can expect a day of high drama including crashes, rolls and a lot of show-boating in what promises to be a great day out for everybody.
With participating teams made up of friends, work colleagues, design geeks, car fanatics and pure speed junkies, there will be a wealth of exuberant local talent on display for everyone to marvel at. Having been given three months to bring their designs to life, the clock is now ticking before they have to put themselves, their teammates and their constructions to the ultimate test on thebumpy, narrow and twisting race track.
“We’re excited and happy to be one of the participants in this event. We’ve worked out the basic materials for the soapbox but still need to work on the overall performance, graphic design and our costumes. We took part in the Red Bull Flugtag in 2010 so know just how much time and money all the participants spend on an event like this and as more can actually go wrong in this race, think we’ll need to give the design and build even more attention,” commented Mo Kit Fong from Team滾滾鴛鴛煲.
“For us, it’s not just about getting down the hill but making sure that we have a lot of fun on the way and provide some entertainment for the spectators,” added Fong, who also took part in the famous Red Bull Flugtag 2010, which saw competitors put their human-powered flying machines to the test.
Man Fat So fromTeam快打小強, who is competing in his first Red Bull event added, “I’m very excited and hope that we can surprise a few people. Our focus is definitely on the entertainment part rather than pure speed but hopefully everyone will like what they see. It’s going to be a bit daunting performing in front of a big crowd, but it’s a great opportunity to show off and have a bit of fun – and hopefully get over the finish line in one piece. Our reason for joining: We all work together and have a good laugh outside the office so thought we’d take it to a new level and if we get a prize for it, all the better.”
A mix of bravery, brainpower and lunacy are the key ingredients for success in the Red Bull Soapbox Race. Passionate and ingenious teams will battle it out to be crowned the winner, with the race itself being judged on speed, creativity and showmanship.
The first Red Bull Soapbox Race took place in Belgium in 2000, and has since visited almost 30 countries including Austria, England, Jamaica, Czech Republic and Australia to name a few. 2012 marks the inaugural event in Hong Kong which will see competitors racefull speed down a372 metertrackin their home-built cars before finishing on To Shek Street in Shatin.
So if you’re looking for a fun filled day for you and the family, combining the need for speed with some creative flair, then come to the Red Bull Soapbox Race at 3pm on Sunday 14 th October for your chance to cheer on some home town heroes in their magnificent driving machines.
