A meaningful week volunteer work

Last week I volunteered on a Room 13 project and spent 2 mornings with the kids in鮮魚行學校 (Fresh Fish Trader's School) teaching them arts and creating some artworks together.

Room 13 is an art studio installed at chosen schools, run by the learners, supported by an artist-in residence and sponsored by the TBWA\Group and corporate sponsors. It is a worldwide initiative. ( more...)

鮮魚行學校 (Fresh Fish Trader's School) is a primary school with a number of new migrants from the mainland and kids from the underprivileged communities. Established in 1969, the primary school was almost shut down not once but twice – in 2004 under the education bureau’s decision to cut classes and in 2007 when the bureau stipulated schools had to enroll a minimum of 23 Primary One students for the academic year. The school managed to ‘survive’ only after passing the bureau’s Special Review Report in 2004 and later by privatizing the operation of its Primary One class. It is being subsidized by the government for the 2008/09 year as it has enrolled sufficient students, but 53-year-old headmaster Leung Kee Cheong is still worried about his school’s future.
