橙色軍團、第四任丈夫
以第二次世界大戰德軍佔領荷蘭為背景的史詩電影《橙色軍團》,踏入抗爭和妥協之間的灰色地帶,是人是鬼無從界定,問心一句也總交代無從,影片令保羅韋浩雲聲名大噪,更獲金球獎最佳外語片提名。《第四任丈夫》則披上懸疑驚慄的類型外衣,後期佛洛伊德的死亡本能探究滲透全片。兩部作品都為保羅韋浩雲日後進軍荷里活奠下了基礎。
在10月27日的映後座談會上,李焯桃及王勛談到保羅韋浩雲顛覆類型傳統,挑戰觀眾的道德底線。他的敘事技巧高明,卻喜歡在片中探討較敏感話題,如性、暴力及宗教等。在他的影片中,性別角色經常被顛覆,女性總能佔上風,甚至操縱男性於股掌之上。

SOLDIER OF ORANGE and THE FOURTH MAN
Based on a Dutch war hero's best-selling memoir, SOLDIER OF ORANGE is one of the most powerful war epics ever made. The filmed earned a Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the Golden Globes, and came in 2nd for best Dutch film of the 20th century by the Netherland Film Festival. Considered a prequel to BASIC INSTINCT, THE FOURTH MAN is a darkly comic Freudian thriller that is erotic, stylish and outrageously bizarre, and it brings Verhoeven under the spotlights of Hollywood.
In the post-screening seminar on 27 Oct, critics Li Cheuk-to and Geoffrey Wong discussed how Verhoeven subverts genre conventions and challenges the morality of the audience. He has great narrative skills to imbue ambiguity into controversial subject matters, including sex, violence and religion. In his films, the gender roles are often overturned, where women always have the upper hand to manipulate the lustful men.
