[#SummerIFF17] Back to the Screen: LOVE AND DEATH and THE KING OF COMEDY For those all familiar with #WoodyAllen as the overanxious, underachieving intellectual in Manhattan, you’ll find incredible funs seeing him play a Russian coward-turned-war hero trying to kill Napoleon in LOVE AND DEATH, an early work purportedly a satire of all things Russian. For those all familiar with #MartinScorsese’s crime genre, you’ll find #RobertDeNiro unpredictably hilarious, playing a nerdish man who has gone nuts in kidnapping #JerryLewis just for a chance to become THE KING OF COMEDY, creating the current vogue of “anti-comedy.”
In the post-screening talk on 19 Aug, critic Geoffrey Wong stated that LOVE AND DEATH marked the end of Woody Allen’s early funny period. The film was full of interesting references: the father-son prison talk was a parody of Dostoyevsky; the appearance of the Grim Reaper was taken from Ingmar Bergman’s THE SEVENTH SEAL; and Allen’s slapstick acting was a kind of tribute to Chaplin, Hope and Marx. The mock-serious philosophical debates later became iconic in his classic films like ANNIE HALL.
