But if something stays funny for decades, it’s clearly reaching across cultures and contexts to arouse our laughter for a good reason. The awkward physicality of Buster Keaton adds surreal flights of language and personality in STEAMBOAT BILL, JR; the symphonic looniness of the Marx Brothers turns an opera house into a hilarious circus in A NIGHT AT THE OPERA; the marvelous impersonations of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon transform a reckless escape into a farcical comedy of inspiration in SOME LIKE IT HOT, the funniest American picture of the 20th century.
In the seminar held on 17 Aug, critics Bryan Chang and Geoffrey Wong said that slapstick comedies in the 19th century was a new art genre created by remarkable comedians in response to the age of mechanical reproduction. The mechanical movement technique of #CharlieChaplin, the surreal acrobatic comic style of #BusterKeaton, and the sympathetic suspense of #HaroldLloyd not only created an influential force of comedy, but also raised issues of class and virtue in a cockeyed world.
