Conquer film, or be conquered by film? Fueled by the success of revolutionary Russia, post-war German filmmakers saw films as weapons in ongoing struggles, where ideologies were expressed by powerful stories that became parables of suffering and redemption. Even today, it’s still striking to see the urban working class fighting against oppression in THE WEAVERS, and the tragedies of people’s lives being ruined by drink, prostitution and despair in MOTHER KRAUSE’S JOURNEY TO HAPPINESS. These restored classics give a rare opportunity to apprehend the leftist vision of an era.
