Faraway so close, is it a love that binds them or destroys them? In LA NOTTE, #MichelangeloAntonioni watches love wither away into the darkness of the night, as his camera follows the deteriorating relationship of an unfaithful married couple in a day. Whereas in DON’T TOUCH THE AXE, #JacquesRivette contemplates the fruitlessness of romance, as he frames a complicated duet of temptations and feints, honor and rewards. In the post-screening talk of DON’T TOUCH THE AXE held on 7 Jan, critic William Lau stated that Rivette’s adaptation of the Balzac novel is in complete respectfulness to the original, reflecting a strong criticism of the social immorality of the 19th century, while maintaining his subdued elegance of an entangled love affair. ?
