While #Herzog considered NOSTERATU (1922) to be the finest film ever to come out of Germany, and even created some shots beat for beat, his NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE (1979) distinguishes itself apart from #Murnau’s original classic. Murnau’s stylized silent picture practically invented the horror genre and set a formal precedent few have equaled since; whereas Herzog’s version shows how complex, surreal, even moving that genre could be, and emerged as one of the all-time best remakes. A rare opportunity to see both restored classics in one go on 28 April, and you’ll know why Dracula‘s charm lasts forever.
