馬徐維邦的《夜半歌聲》及《夜半歌聲續集》被譽為中國恐怖電影經典作,融入了民初時代背景,借古諷今。導演展現強烈個人風格,融合德國表現主義的攝影,高度舞台化的演出,和行雲流水的場面調度,反映出一個頹廢耽溺甚至病態的視野。上集寫革命志士兼歌劇演員宋丹萍被陷害毀容的故事,下集講他大難不死暗中為革命奔走,對痛苦、恐懼、絕望的刻劃淋漓盡致,隱隱與當時國難深重的處境相呼應。今次選映的是全新修復版本,3月27日場次設映後座談會,講者Dr Cormac Newark,主持陳智廷 (英語主講)。

? SONG AT MIDNIGHT and SONG AT MIDNIGHT, PART II
Maxu Weibang's SONG AT MIDNIGHT is arguably the first Chinese horror film and billed as "the most fascinating and creative of all interpretations of Gaston Leroux's horrid tale". Along with its sequel SONG AT MIDNIGHT, PART II, made at the height of the Sino-Japanese war, both films reflect the Chinese society in the early republican years. Part one tells the story of Song, a young revolutionary and an opera singer, being framed and disfigured. Part two follows his plastic surgery and then rejoining the revolutionaries. It develops a portrayal of suffering, fear and despair, subtly mirroring the predicament China was in during those turbulent years.
