Selected for the 37 th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), up-and-coming Taiwanese director Arvin CHEN ( )’s latest feature
had its Asian premiere at Hong Kong Cultural Centre today. Cast members Mavis FAN, Stone (Mayday) and Stephen WONG Ka-lok all showed up to meet the audience together with veteran producer LEE Lieh and the director himself.
Mavis FAN and pop singer-actor Richie JEN play a happily-married couple, until the husband meets a cute Hong Kong flight attendant (Stephen WONG) and has his life completely upended. Balancing sweet humor with social consciousness, the film is genuinely reflective of the lives of many closeted gays. “I am extremely moved by the controlled and convincing performance of Richie and Mavis,” said Arvin CHEN. “They effectively convey the inner turmoil and complex emotions of the characters with every line they say and every move they make.”
Speaking of her nervous breakdown scene, Fan said, “To relate to the role, I kept asking myself what it would feel like if my partner became really cold and distant. Within seconds my eyes were full of tears and I couldn’t help hitting Richie until my hands were swollen. I guess I have to apologise to poor Richie for that!”
had its world premiere to wide acclaim at the recently concluded Berlin Film Festival. Producer LEE Lieh commented, “this is not just a story about middle-aged gay men coming out of the closet. It explores larger and universal themes such as how to lead our life without regrets, and what it means to love someone and oneself. By tackling serious issues with a light-hearted style, we believe the film can resonate profoundly with the audience.”
