Forever classic: 37th HKIFF to present eight restored classics

The 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will serve up a rich showcase of eight digitally restored, all time classics of cinema. Four selections have been announced, including , , and – get ready to be mesmerised by the beautiful new prints of these landmark films!

The Cloud Capped Star

A perennial presence in Sight & Sound's Top 250 Greatest Films Poll, Indian New Wave maestro Ritwik Ghatak (Director in Focus, 9th HKIFF)'s

tells the moving tale of a woman's sacrifice for her family. Living in post-colonial Calcutta after the partition of Bengal left families exiled outside their ancestral homes, an eldest daughter must navigate the demands of her family while suppressing her own desires. "A masterpiece… Few films have delved more deeply into the cruelty of family life." – The Village Voice

Lawrence of Arabia

Shot on-location in the desert with a cast of thousands, and with spilling running time over 4 hours – no studio today would make films like this, David Lean's 1962 magnum opus chronicles the adventures of the flamboyant and charismatic British World War I hero T. E. Lawrence, who led Arabian tribesmen against the ruling Ottoman Empire. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this seven-time Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing), Sony Pictures embarked on a meticulous digital restoration that scanned the original negative at 8K resolution, while the audio soundtrack has been remastered in 5.1 channel surround sound. The result is still as breathtaking today if not more so, than at the time of its original release – a staggering widescreen theatrical experience by one of the cinema's top masters.

Heaven's Gate

Time heals all wounds, especially those inflicted by the oversized and unfairly negative reaction that greeted

upon its premiere in 1980. The film's legendarily troubled, costly production and box office flop derailed the career of Michael Cimino, Oscar-winning director of . Three decades later, he was able to realize his final cut of the film in a digitally restored version that proves once and for all the majestic vision behind this ambitious production. Starring Kris Kristofferson and Isabelle Huppert, the film follows an idealistic Harvard graduate who has relocated to Wyoming as a federal marshal, only to discover a government-sanctioned plot by rich cattle barons to kill European settlers for their land. At once a potent critique of expansionism and a deconstruction of the American Western, represents the last of the great Hollywood epics made without computer enhancements.

With eleven years in the making, 350 hours of raw footage, and shot in 14 different countries,

is, in the words of world-famous film critic Roger Ebert, "an extraordinary film... one of the noblest ever made", justifying every minute of its epic nine and a half hour runtime. Concentrating on the heartrending accounts from survivors, witnesses and even perpetrators,
Claude Lanzmann travelled around the globe in order to conduct these interviews. However this documentary is hardly a succession of talking heads; its most emotional scenes occur when some of his subjects return to the death camps and the ghettos and relive their agonising past.

傳奇印度電影之父列域格達（第九屆電影節焦點導演）的傑作《雲堆裏的星》，多年來一直入選英國權威電影雜誌《Sight & Sound》「250部史上最偉大電影」。故事發生在解殖後的加爾各答，女主角妮達是個吃苦天使，父親患病，哥哥懶惰，弟弟重傷，妹妹自私，工心計的母親 要妮達肩負全家擔子，甚至默許妹妹搶走她的愛人。美國《村聲》雜誌高度評價：「沒有一部電影，能如此深刻地剖開家庭制度的殘酷一面。」光影和構圖絕對考 究，修復後的新版更突出了超時代的視覺和音響效果，加倍感人。

沙漠梟雄

《沙漠梟雄》是可一不可再的影壇奇蹟：動員成千上萬的演員、在一望無際的沙漠取景、超過四小時的片長……大師大衛連這部代表作，主角是浮誇又迷人的英國軍 人羅倫斯，在第一次世界大戰期間帶領阿拉伯部落抵抗鄂斯曼帝國。電影當年橫掃七項奧斯卡獎項，包括最佳電影、最佳導演、最佳美術指導、最佳攝影和最佳剪 接，適逢此片面世五十周年，Sony Pictures展開巨細無遺的數碼修復，以8K解像度掃描原裝菲林，加上重新灌製的5.1環繞聲道立體音效，千軍萬馬氣波瀾壯闊，為觀眾帶來前所未有的 史詩式官能刺激。

導演：米高契敏奴　美國　1980　216分鐘《天堂之門》是個傳奇，當年巨額超資，票房慘敗，電影公司馬上剪掉70分鐘再上畫，導演米高契敏奴從此不認此作。去年，這位《獵鹿者》金像導演重新調正全 片色調，威尼斯影展足本放映，經典大場面琳瑯滿目，電影成功平反。故事背景是十九世紀末的美國西部，滿懷理想的哈佛畢業生占，當上懷俄明小鎮執法長官，怎 料富商和高官為趕絕歐洲移民，竟擬出追殺名單。占疲於調停，卻跟殺手愛上同一妓女（伊莎貝雨蓓的首部美國片）。契敏奴走在時代之前，直斥資本主義的無法無 天。那是荷里活的美好年代，沒有特技掩眼法，重構實景全是真功夫，幕幕皆見大師造詣。

大浩劫

導演：克勞德朗茲曼　法國　1985　543分鐘

《大浩劫》花了十一年才拍成，法國導演克勞德朗茲曼走訪十四個國家，錄取的片段長達350小時。無可取替的紀錄片鉅製，全長九個半小時，細視納粹屠猶留下 的傷痕：電影大膽棄用當年的檔案片段，而是讓屠殺的倖存者、目擊者、甚至共犯現身說法，回歸活生生的人性視角。朗茲曼親訪散居各地的當事人，由始至終無需 煽情，就如生還者重返集中營一幕，創傷留在臉上的痕跡，猶勝千言萬語。大歷史容不下的小故事，《大浩劫》一一重現。著名影評家羅渣伊伯特讚口不絕：「驚為 天人的作品……史上最偉大的電影之一。」
