Wai Ka-fai, The 35
th Hong Kong International Film Festival Filmmaker in Focus
Hong Kong, 19 January 2011 –The 35 th Hong Kong International Film Festival (March 20 to April 5, 2011) commends famous Hong Kong filmmaker, WAI Ka-fai, with a series of events during the festival, with screenings, seminars and the publication of a special catalogue.
W AI Ka-fai, Filmmaker in Focu s will bring to the Festival audience eleven of WAI’s most celebrated films made from 1995 to 2009.
“WAI Ka-fai, who works in both film and television, is one of Hong Kong’s most talented writers and producers. The HKIFF is pleased to have a chance pay a tribute to him by reviewing and exploring his illustrious career. We also hope that this effort will inspire and encourage newcomers to the industry,” said LI Cheuk-to, Artistic Director of HKIFF.
No genre is safe from being upended in WAI Ka-fai’s magical acts of commercial cinema. Celebrated for his creative partnership with helmer Johnnie TO in Milkyway Image, the Hong Kong production house established in 1996, WAI made his name as a writer and producer for TV before powering into film directing in the mid-1990s. The dusty Eastern Western Peace Hotel (1995) and the manic gangland mashup Too Many Ways to Be No. 1 (1997) sounded a warning of WAI's push for shaking things up, and by 2000 Milkyway Image leapt from taut thrillers to risk-taking box-office smashes, with WAI taking on scriptwriting, producing and co-directing duties.
Often paired with the most
commercial of hooks — emergency-room dramas, festive mahjong farces, a
megastar in a muscle suit — offbeat explorations of fate, psychology
and the metaphysical became hallmarks of WAI's canon. In more recent
works
Mad Detective (2007, with TO) and
Written By
(2009), pop norms are exploited and torn apart, intricate setups teeter
on collapse and audiences are kept on the alert, clinging to every
narrative thread. At a time that his city's filmmakers place ever more
emphasis on the mainland blockbuster scene, WAI still favours a
singular, challenging course in smaller widescreen experiments — and
Hong Kong cinema is all the richer for it.

Face to Face features WAI Ka-fai
sharing his insights on film, art and life. A complimentary bi-lingual publication on the filmmaker will also be offered to all participants.

第35屆香港國際電影節焦點影人：韋家輝
2011 年 1 月 19 日 （香港）－ 第35屆香港國際電影節 (3月20日至 4月5日)將舉辦一連串活動推介今年的焦點影人韋家輝，包括一系列韋家輝電影放映、講座，以及出版專題特刊，讓影迷回顧韋家輝的經典作品及分享其創作歷程。
是次專題回顧特別精選韋家輝於不同年代的11部佳作，讓影迷一起重溫。香港國際電影節協會藝術總監李焯桃表示：「從電視劇到電影，韋家輝一直是香港首屈一指的創作奇才。我們很高興電影節有機會向他致敬，回顧和探討其創作歷程，對後來者將有極大的啟迪和鼓舞。」
早在八、九十年代電視時期，韋家輝已充份流露他在劇本和人物設定上的不落俗套和偏鋒筆觸。《誓不低頭》、《義不容情》、《大時代》等長篇電視劇，叫人刮目 相看；丁蟹一角性格既瘋狂又迷人，儼然成為當年香港的民間英雄。96年與杜琪峯合組「銀河映像」，創業作《一個字頭的誕生》已別創一格，成為後97香港電 影的新興力量。
遊走於通俗主流與個人發揮之間的韋家輝，不斷於劇本題材與結構上作更大膽的嘗試：《大隻 佬》以佛理入戲讓人大嘖嘖稱奇；《喜馬拉亞星》玩盡天人合一的意念；《最愛女人購物狂》加入精神分析；《神探》則探討多重人格。2009年自編自導的《再 生號》更上層樓，格局之奇與境界之妙，打破了商業電影與藝術電影的分野，甚至激起文化界一場爭論，成為香港電影極致創意的一座里程碑。在今日合拍片蔚然成 風，港產片獨憔悴的情況下，回顧韋家輝的作品尤具意義。
香港名家講座
第35屆香港國際電影節為表揚香港著名電影人韋家輝，特別安排專題講座，讓影迷更了解他的作品及創作歷程。屆時，韋家輝將分享他對電影、藝術和生活獨到的見解。各參加者均可獲贈韋家輝的雙語專題特刊一本。
