END MOODS/CURRENTS
| Entry | Just got back from a late night screening on Transformers at Emery Bay...
I avoided a lot of the hype and trailers and went into it w/ pretty reserved expectations, despite good word of mouth.
I was overall pleasently surprised! some of it, especially the first 1/2 or 1/3 or so is really good. the comedic dialogue (bernie mack) and the performances from the lead actors was pretty good...
but once it started being all about the robots and government agencies, and less about the normal people the story seemed to get a little stale and slow (and overly comedic at this point(john tuturo) )...
the effects were pretty good, you can hardly tell its CG! they did a good job w/ the surface finishes... i can't say i saw really any weak cg at all... the problems were more in the camera work and editing, lots of harried zoomed-in-to-far shots that are cut together really quick in certain scenes that leaves you scratching your head and thinking 'what exactly is going on? which robot just did that?'
The last 1/3 turns into pure action and battle and drops a lot of the subplots and minor characters... towards the end you're thinking 'hey, what ever happened to jon Voight?!?'
to keep this brief and avoid anymore spoilage - let me just say that the opening is really strong, the stunt driving is quite good, the chemistry of the leads (Shia whats his name and the Fox girl) is good too. The transformers look pretty good, but the story goes long and a bit too winding towards the 2nd half. also keep in mind it IS a michael bey movie.... every few minutes i'd start groaning as YET ANOTHER slow mo shot w/ lots of wind while fancy orchestra music plays in the audio track...
I'll give it a 7.5... 8/10 for the first 2/3s and a 6/10 for the last 1/3.
