Friday afternoon I gave my talk (with a pretty good reception, I was impressed with the turnout, especially considering it was the last session of the last day!)
That night they had a ' Night Safari' Trip that was included in the cost of the conference, dinner was included too apparently (between the banquets and what not, you DID get a lot for your money compared to most conferences).
They put us all on some buses and it was dark by the time we got to the park. They had a ' tiki room' type restaurant that they sat everyone in...
It had a very Disney feeling, but no singing robots or anything like that... Can't say I was pleased with my Fried Rice plate... there was (fake?) crab in there... doh.
The main thing to do here is a tram ride through the park:
This is our guide, who spent a lot of time reminding people (like me) to turn off the flashes on their camera. luckily for me, I only blinded him with my flash, and not any of the animals.
The tram goes through the park and past a bunch of habitats with different animals. They use really low lighting (not much more than moon light) - so you can't really see where one ends and the other one begins, but basically they're all fenced in and blocked from the road by a moat or hidden fence or something.
But since it was so dark, and most of the time the tram didn't move, my camera couldn't take pictures worth sh!t... although i kept thinking 'damn, my casio could do better than this!)
this is probably the best picture I got. with a little help from Photoshop you can make out what Animal it was:
Actually thats not the easiest to recognize, this one was easier:
but just because it was brighter and the animals in question are harder to miss! 。。
Probably the coolest of all the animals was this male bull elephant, they kept it separated from the rest (for whatever reason). His name is Chawang and he apparently has 2m long tusks... (and according to one thing i read on the net, he gored a keeper a few years back too!)
Not incredibly exciting. We also did some of the foot paths through other parts of the park. They had an animal show which is apparently very interesting, but since it was risking raining any second, we decided not to stick around to see if the next one would actually happen or not. ;-)
