Scuba Test Day 2: we passed

Today was the 2nd part of our final open water diving course.  If we survived the day, we can get our PADI diving certification!

we met at Saikung at 9 and a small launch back to our diving boat.  we left our diving stuff hanging there the night before, but because of the heavy thunderstorms last night, it all got wet again! (putting on a soggy, cold bathing suit is not fun).

But first we had to take our written test.  my coworker Tom took it the week before but he didn't pass the first time and retook it a second time before he managed to get enough right to pass (you need to get at least 35 out of 50 to pass.  we were worried so we had been cramming the last day or two... but we all managed to pass the first time (i got like 42,  pat got 48... nerd).

then it was time for more diving and testing in the water

look, its the Gun Show!

ok, i'll put one of me in, just to be fair.  thats our 'rescue diver' Jeannie.

The visibility was much much better today,  yesterday we could only see like 3 feet,  this time we could see like 12 or 15.  not nearly as good as Hawaii, but at least respectable.  The diving spots were also much better!

I had no idea HK had so many tropical fish and undersea creatures.  we saw a lot of schools of colorful tropical fish, a few pairs of brightly colored clown fish (a la Nemo), crabs, sea urchins, sea anemones, and even an eel.  Pat said saw one tentacle of an octopus under a rock,  but all I saw were the torn apart crab shells that it left around its den.

One of the cooler things we saw were Cornet Fish (or maybe it was its close cousin, the trumpet fish).

At the end of the day we got the good news:

Boon passed!

We took a group picture at the front of the boat:

In the middle is our diving instructor. On the far left are our Dive Master and Rescue Diver (aka the TAs).

On the right is another guy on the trip who was constantly smoking cigars when he wasn't underwater.   He's in the picture cause he happened to be sitting there, not cause he was part of our diving class.

If any of you guys are in HK and are interested in diving or diving training, send me a message, they teach advanced courses in many subjects in addition to 1 day intro lessons and the basic certification course (what we took).

We're thinking about the advanced course... I'm really interested in underwater digital photography...  but i don't know if i need to take a class for that. ;-)
