an EXTREMELY mild 6/10 for this one! one step away from a rotten in my book! (i thought it was less /not-rotten/ than pirates 2, if thats possible!)
clocking in at 2:45, not including the credits, this movie is all over the map (literally) and the story is more convoluted than even Pirates 2!
But unlike Pirates 2, the action and adventure feel is absent for most of the movie. Even when it is finally shows up during the last 1/2 hour, the fun, swashbuckling spirit of the first two Pirates movie seems a bit tainted to me. Maybe it was too many shots of people getting blown away by cannon balls or being murdered by tentacles... I dunno but it kind of got on my nerves after a while.
And then there's Chow Yun Fat... let me warn you, he's only in the movie for like 10 minutes total! like a lot of the scenes and subplots of this movie, it doesn't really make any difference in the overall plot. As much as I like CYF, and felt like he /could/ have contributed to the movie greatly, i'd have just as easily been happy if most of the first 45-60 minutes of this movie was left out and this movie was a lot more focused on the finale and not the rest of the junk - pirate politics, lost loves, sea goddesses, double crosses, etc (including Keith Richards' cameo!) - cut out 90% of it and the movie would be much more bearable!
Marginal as possible thumbs up. The finale is the only good part. I definitely feel Spider-Man 3 was way superior!
ps - Like the 2nd one, they put a scene at the end.
