Party at the Grand Stage, Western Market, Sheung Wan, HK

Friday night S organized a big party for C at the 'Grand Stage', which is a restaurant/dance hall place on the top of the famed Western Market in Sheung Wan.   C is going to be leaving HK soon and it happens that her birthday is coming up, so we rolled both into one.  Altogether there were like 40-50 people in our group I think.

This is my first time to visit the Grand Stage,  its basically a large hall with tables, some on the upper balcony, some in alcoves, some in glass enclosed rooms....   and a big dance floor:

ここに始した。大きいなハールです。舞踏所も在る:

Chandeliers were pretty impressive.  Unfortunately a bit dark for photo taking though.

This is just one of the 3 or 4 tables we had.  We had met a lot of the people before, but still only about 1/2...  Thats S and C in the center, Pat (extreme left) and Swang (in black on the right). 。。

The food was basically chinese banquet style...

Lots of different dishes.  I stuck to the roasted meats mostly.

After a bit people started dancing and they had a live singer come on with a band.  The first singer was Chinese and not a particularly good singer (too loud!)  she butchered 'Happy Birthday To You' even...   Later on they had a Filipino woman with big scary anti-gravity hair who was much better. She did some more hip numbers too, including 'Material Girl' by Madonna. :-P

But the dancing was pretty hilarious... I've seen ballroom dancing classes before... and of course I've watched both the Japanese and American versions of 'Shall We Dance',  but I'm not sure I was prepared for the Hong Kong version. :-P  Some of the people apparently go there quite regularly for dancing...  lots of superfluous arm flailing on the guys...  a few were just too comical to not burst out laughing. :-P

But since we were with dancers,  of course some people (not me) joined in too:僕は撮ったのビデオ見てください:

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTg0Hgsv8r0 I liked the atmosphere here.  It really had a 1950's vibe... something you'll only see in a movie nowadays.  I kept thinking of that chacha scene in the beginning of 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' (Bruce was apparently the Cha Cha dancing champion of HK before he moved to the US).

Here's Pat downing an endless stream of beer at the Mainlanders table. He got nostalgic for Xiamen or something... :-P

Last but not least, I got two pictures with my friends S and C:

Apparently S decided to go casual tonight... S

The lady of the evening.  We gotta start planning our AnD London roadtip!
