Fukuoka 10 - Vampire Maid Cafe Club!?

Yes, I did take a short trip to Japan this weekend.  I decided to come back to Fukuoka, the city in Western Japan where I used to live before moving to HK.

I'll be too busy enjoying the food and friendship to update my blog much for the next few days, but here's a quick one to hold you over.

Near my hotel I found a new (to me) Maid Cafe.  Back when I lived here, there were only two or three places.  Now there seem to be more, now even here on the Hakata side of the river:

This place is called 'Vampire Maid Cafe Club'.  What is a Cafe Club you ask?  Good question, I didn't know either...

actually this sign out front explains it all:

for those who can't read Japanese, let me paraphrase...  its a maid cafe with two types of 'courses'...  the cheap one is like a regular cafe,  for 500 yen (~US$6), you get a drink and can stay for up to 40 minutes. (if you stay longer I assume they make you buy another drink).  This type of time limit per drink is somewhat common at Maid Cafes... they have to put it in otherwise the otaku guys will get one drink and stay the whole day...

The other course is more expensive,  it basically says for 1000-1200 yen, a maid will sit with you while you enjoy a drink and free piece of cake..... 1000 yen for 30 minutes!

wow,  sounds more like a hostess club than a maid cafe!

In actuality, if you come at night, you can only do the more expensive option... and it costs even more.      This is actually more like a 'Girls Bar'... another Japanese invention,  a bar where you pay by the hour... and the staff are all attractive women who pretend to care what you are telling them. (ok, I don't think the Japanese actually invented that!)

Anyway,  I was joking with my friend that this is a step closer to getting the otaku nerd guys to transition towards a 'real'  hostess club...    they're basically hostesses who happen to be wearing maid costumes....

well if you put it that way, why am I not there right now?!?

Actually from the pictures, they don't look super hot:

But that's the whole point w/ maid cafes,   its not about the girls' looks, its about how well they do the maid behavior that makes the otaku fans coming back day after day. :-P

anyway, maybe i'll go tomorrow night for a few minutes to check it out. :-D

Satoko - this is near hakata. It's definitely cheaper than a 'real' hostess bar, but more expensive than a regular maid cafe.
