Fukuoka 10 - Real Maid Cafe Undercover!

In addition to discovering (but not actually visiting) the ' Vampire Maid Cafe Club' near my hotel, I also took the opportunity to stop by what is most likely the oldest Maid Cafe in Fukuoka (5 years and counting), which I have been visiting on occasion when I get a chance to come back to town.  (Long time Etchy blog readers will recall whenever I'm in Japan I try to visit a cafe or two during my visit.  And LONG long long time Etchy blog readers will remember that I actually used to patronize 'Home Cafe Fairy' back in the day when I was working here in Fukuoka before they went out of business).

You're totally NOT supposed to take pics, but for my faithful blog readers, I am willing to break some rules (I've been living in China too long!)

Compared to some of the fancier places in Tokyo, this one is pretty plain jane (as far as maid cafes go),  but its done well and the girls are cute and do the maid act well.

Business was quite brisk,  there was actually a line for tables outside.  As you can expect with a place like this,  they were almost all 'tables for one'. :-D

Actually I had to wait outside before I could get in too.  When I got there there were two people already waiting outside,  one was a girl and one was a guy.  Its not / that/ uncommon to see female customers at places like this, especially on weekends.   I didn't pay much attention to them but they appeared to be talking to each other continuously while we were waiting for the next table to clear. I assumed they were there together and would be sitting together at a table once one opened up.

After about 5 minute the maid came out and asked for the next customer.  Contrary to my expectation,  only the girl went in and the guy stayed there.

Then after the girl left the guy kept talking.... to himself!  I then realized that he was some kind of mentally unbalanced 'otaku' who rambles continuously to himself... and the girl was only politely ignoring him the entire time! :-O

The rest of the customers who came in were not much better. But that's half the fun with these places:

Come for the maids... stay to gawk at the parade of socially inept geeks that patronize the place.

The irony is not lost on me that I am actually also patronizing this place,  but then I at least have a sense of irony about it. and as a non-Japanese person hanging out at Maid Cafes... I'm a different kind of creepy entirely. :-P

Flagday - they generally leave me alone other than the requisite stop by to check in. mostly because of the language barrier issues. (I have met a few maids in my time who spoke good english... but even then, they're usually busy running around). but yes, they are signs telling people not to try to ask the girls for personal info or to wait outside for them to get off work, etc.....

Joanne - they started up in Tokyo about 7 or 8 years ago bit didn't really blow up until about 5 years ago when they quickly spread across the country (and around the world). they still seem quite popular! :-P
