My Day Job

As a music composer/producer, I also make music for film and TV. I score TV commercials, features, short films, documentries, TV series, film trailers etc. I am usually involved in the job from a very early stage of story boards and scrīpts, we talk a lot about the direction and tone and manner for the music.  Mostly working with creative directors, writer and film directors. After they shoot the film and edit it, I am usually given the film early in the day and usually I have to finish the job by evening the same day. Its hard work but I enjoy it. There is always a time issue, like they needed it yesterday..etc. Usually I am given more time for the bigger jobs like some of the ones below. I am responsible for all the music and pretty much all the sound FX also.

Hi Director. How many cans pf Pepsi did they offer for my musical soul ??!? That seems like a very nasty question. Do you feel because I make music for a commercials, I have sold my soul ?? Why do you feel this way ?! Sourcing sounds is like buying paint because each sound is basically a different color. As for sourcing and copying music (anything that contains a melody), well, that would depends one each composer. There are many well known composers in HK that copies. Unfortunately, most of them get away with it. Having said that, there are times when composers are given the rights to copy as "clients" might buy a well known track (eg: "Imagine" by John Lennon) and depending on the rights they buy, they can either use the original track or ask someone to copy it note for note. This is legal as long as the composer or publisher have sold the rights and give the permission to do so for a sum of money. The awesome soundtrack that you refer to in the Mission is by Ennio Morricone, he is probably the closest thing to my hero. By the way, Morricone sold Coke China the rights to use the theme to "The Good the Bad and the Ugly". Ennio was also commissioned to write a track for the above Burberry's ad. He did so but the director did not buy it. Beyond (the HK band) sold the rights of their "Hoi Fuet Teen Hung" to HK Broadband for their commercial. In fact they have sold the rights several times to different clients. "Imagine" by John Lennon was once used for HK Telecom commercial, the rights were released by Yoko. So does this mean John Lennon or Yoko, Ennio Morricone, and Beyond just to name a few, have sold their soul ?? Regarding other HK composers and what I think, I honestly don't know enough of their work to make a comment as I don't seek out their work. None of the commercials I have posted are by Andrew Lau.
