THE WORK I WILL BE SHOWCASING (still in progress..)
“CARVING YOUR OWN PATH”
Price : $4000
Medium : acrylic on canvas panels
Dimensions : 36″x42″
what equates your idea of success? money? achievement? happiness? how do you dictate your life in order to be successful? the three fish represent choosing the impetus that moves us to where we want to be. my idea of success is in the order of: achievement, happiness, and money - though some days all three will flip flop. the past few years, i have been happy but slowly moving towards progress with my fine art career. the year 2010 has been great to me, but also a huge financial struggle. i got a job offer that i was excited about, but after much deliberation, i decided it was not for me. i believed that taking on a task that would force me to quit my lifestyle (painting, teaching, freelance, etc) was worth a job that has little to do with art. in a way, i gave up $70,000 in order to live the way i want to live. to be able to maintain this value is, to me, an achievement; thus in its own way, a personal success.
“TRYING TO KEEP MY HEAD ABOVE WATER”
Price : $850
Medium : acrylic on canvas
Dimensions : 24″x30″
i once had a college professor say, statistically, two percent of artists will make a career on their own art. he also told me that if i worked as hard as i did, i could make that two percent. pursuing a career on art is terribly hard. the economy doesnt help, but everybody is suffering so i cant act like im special. i balance several types of freelance jobs which includes: part-time teaching, fine art, commercial art, and promotional work. i feel like im constantly struggling to keep my head above water, and i feel like im constantly dancing for quarters. struggling to be a part of that two percentile, however, is a life i love and i wouldnt have it any other way.
“RIDING ON EACH OTHERS COAT TAILS”
Price : $500
Medium : acrylic on canvas
Dimensions : 24″x24″
i am constantly surrounded by people, especially artists, who are stuck in a ‘purgatory’. i have noticed that in order to survive, people ride on each others ‘coat tails’ in order to get to where they want to be.
“SKIN”
Price : $350
Medium : acrylic on wood panel
Dimensions : 14″ diameter
some people feel that in order to be successful in fine art, they need to make art that appeals ‘commercially’ to a larger audience. i prefer to separate my art between commercial freelance and fine art illustration. commercial art pays the bills and builds my portfolio; fine art is authentic to who i am. when i continued to be honest with myself, i started selling work. i havent sold to gallery aficionados or collectors, etc. but i have sold to people who just honestly dig what i do — that, in itself, is a huge compliment.
female + gemini + hippie artist = 3 types of crazy = you lose. like an asian version of frida kahlo minus the old balls cheating husband .
