I saw this last night with approximately 50% of the Movie Night gang. We went to the Dynasty, figuring it was going to be a film that required a little talking back to.
To be honest, I expected to hatethis movie.
Partially because it seemed like it would be yet another annoying waste of time like so many recent 'romantic' 'comedies,' and mostly because I find Wong Cho Lam irritating. See?He bothers me in a distinctly metrosexualway.
Frankly, his effeminacy gives me the creeps.
So going into this, I figured I was in for at least a little tooth-grinding.
But I will say that I was pleasantly shocked by the film.
I won't say it was great, but it was much, muchbetter than I expected.
Especially since the appearance of the infuriating I Love You Boyz was kept to a minimum.
And don't get me wrong. I doubt this was intended to be great cinema. It's thoroughly generic, but at least it fulfills those expectations in an amusing and entertaining way.
I also concede that I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outside the target demographic.
Race Wong deserves special mention because of the nature of her role, and the aplomb with which she handled it. I'd say more but I try to be spoiler-free.
Thanks to the penicillin, I am. I promise.
In fact, the film's whole cast did a pretty good job of acting, and they deserve credit.
I enjoyed the Moment of Romance parody segment most, but not for the satire. It was the broadness and depth of the pardoy I really enjoyed.
I really liked Kate Tsui's send-up of the Andy Lau character.
Oh, and I really like Kate Tsui, too. No doubt that helped.
In fairness to the movie, I am sure that a good portion of the humor was lost on me since I don't speak anywhere near enough Cantonese to get a lot of the jokes.
Please, support Race and JJ, and Ellaand go see Short of Love. I think you'll like it, especially if you speak Cantonese.
If we don't support the movies that deserve it, we get the movies that we deserve.
