  • Inspiration or Imitation?

    My subject explain my curiosity.

A friend of mine in the Art business sent me an email with this picture attached.
He said: " I think you were the inspiration of this artist.....
I see too many similarities with the image of you from Shanghai Blues..."

" Thats me in Shanghai Blues" I exclaimed. I am quite sure thats me in the first painting.

I asked him who's the painter and what's her inspiration behind this piece.

It's painted by an indonesian artist name of Astari. He knew of her work from this article about her in C Arts Magazine latest issue sep-oct08. Pg 106.
In the article she says she is painting herself and that her reason behind is that "hand pointing: is that she is the woman who can get what she points at."

It's in a series of 3. An indonesian version, an indian version and of course mindee's version (The chinese version). Title of the painting is call Contestant.

Compare this picture and Astari's painting.

It is really hard for me to believe that she was painting herself. Well ya! When i was taking this picture I  imagined that I wanted to seduce this man i was pointing at. But I was pointing at blank space......
Am I really Astari's Inspiration? Is she really painting herself?
I am quite sure she probably googled or found this picture online or somewhere.....

If you are interested.... here's the link to more of her work.

We were wondering how much is the painting worth?

Astari painted her subjects in almost 2D flat colors which is also dull & almost lifeless, but seem to capture time in a nostalgic faraway place.Mindee's photo shows seductiveness & LIFE. Though the hair are same & they don cheong-sum , NO they are not the same.
This poses another question: is that U in the photo, Mindee?

There's too many 'exact same things' in there. Pretty much as if she was painting on top of a back projection. Funny in the two other pictures, even her facial features are different. Freaky. Gotta wonder what's the 'inspiration' for her other works.

This is probably her idea of  Art IMITATING Life. ...and boy did she get it all wrong!

and eh...sorry for the triple post.  But you're definitely the reference for her to draw that picture.  Look at the shadows on her drawing on your body and clothes and then look at the shadows on your picture.  Not only would she have had to do the exact same pose, in an almost identical outfit, with an old fashioned mic stand.  But she'd have had to have had the same dramatic lighting you had going on when she took her picture as well.

(meant to say lots of artist use images they find as inspiration, and now with the net it's easier to spot and notice them doing it)

Lots of artists use images they find on the net as inspiration.  Pretty common.  The only time I have a problem with it is when it's so obvious, like this one, or when they completely steal another artists work.  And then don't even admit to it.  If she had said she saw your image and liked it and that was the inspiration then I'd not really care.  But when the artist tries to pass of something as originality when they stole it, that's when I get upset with them.

    Yep. Ripped off. Totally.
Surprisingly, this doesn't seem to be an unusual thing for some painters to do.
Two years back, a photographer friend specializing in Black and Jazz music walked into a redecorated, now New-Orleans-themed restaurant, only to see over-lifesize-paintings of his original photography all over the walls. When he got in touch with the artist, the lady claimed the artistic element was her coloring and "re-interpretation" of his b/w-pictures and that he should feel honored she turned his fotos into "art". Yes. Well. Seems somebody turned your still into "art" as well ... Aaaargh!
